Withering Realms Opening Walkthrough
Beynon House to Saintswood: birdcage, scarecrow, and the first two bosses without later spoilers.
This walkthrough covers the opening hours of Withering Realms: Beynon House, then Saintswood, then the first look at Penwyll. It stops before later story beats. Named later dungeons you will hear about in town include the Clocktower and Mazechapel; they are landmarks, not this page’s spoiler list. Steam Early Access opens on 2 September 2026. The game is single-player. You do not need Withering Rooms knowledge. If you have not set binds or spent your first levels, read Getting Started first.
The main quest is mostly linear, with multiple endings and a lot of optional content around the edges. New Game+ and extra side quests are planned during Early Access toward a 1.0 in 2027. You can miss secrets and still finish the spine. You cannot skip the opening house and still understand the doll.
Beynon House
Beynon House is the intro dungeon. Clover wakes there as a nine-year-old ghost with a faint glow. You soon pilot the doll: about two metres of wood, metal, and human remains, right arm missing. Treat the house as a classroom. Learn the 3/4 top-down camera. Learn that some rooms shuffle on entry. Learn that death does not wipe items, crafts, or story. This is not a roguelike, even when a hallway looks different the second time.
Puzzles sit next to combat. The birdcage puzzle is the one most demo players talk about: look for a cage that is a mechanism, not set dressing. Interact, look again, and do not assume the first click finished the job. A scarecrow can look like a prop. In a horror action RPG that is how you donate a flask. If a silhouette does not move, wait. If it waits with you, it is not furniture. The combat guide is the place to practise primary and secondary attacks between puzzle rooms so you are not learning both under a grab.
Do not dump every level into one socket here. Body, left arm, and right arm level separately. Spend a little after you have used a craft, not before. The repair shop is in town, not in the foyer. You do not need a Pivoting Greatsword, Chain Rock, Machinegun, Flamethrower, or Enchanted Candelabrum to leave the house; you need a loop you can repeat. If a fight is stuffing you, change spacing before you change the entire right arm.
Saintswood
Saintswood is the first field. It is larger, darker at night, and more honest about the Occult Frontier. 1926, ten years after an occult event halted the First World War: the dead walk, spirits roam, and some people cast spells. The field teaches you that the doll’s secondary melee carries you forward into grass you have not scanned. Walk the edge. Mark a tree. Come back.
You will meet the first two bosses in this opening stretch. This page will not name later bosses, and it will not narrate their stories. For tactics — spacing, secondary windows, day versus night — use the bosses guide. What belongs here is routing: do not walk into the second fight with every flask spent on wildlife. Do not ignore a scarecrow because the first one was empty. Do not assume the field is finished because the fog gate opened; optional loops in Saintswood hide crafts and talismans you will want in Penwyll.
Night in Saintswood is pitch black with physical lighting. Clover’s glow is easier to see after dark and washed out by day. If you only clear the field at noon you will miss creatures and secrets that exist on the same dirt after dusk. The night cycle guide is the companion page for that second pass.
Penwyll, briefly
Penwyll is the Welsh-inspired town that becomes your hub. Shops, NPCs, the Clocktower, Mazechapel, and a repair shop that builds gadgets for the doll’s arm all sit here. Visit the repair shop once you have parts and a reason, not as a tourist. Replacement eyeballs show up as shop upgrades. The map expands when you defeat perimeter guardians; a closed road is often a fight, not a missing key item. Town at night is a different bestiary. Walk it twice.
Althea is a freelance investigator you will meet as the story widens. Interrogation, lockpicking, forgery, and fixed cameras make her sections feel like classic survival horror. Do not import doll combos into those rooms. Her role is on the characters hub. She is not the opening-hours problem; Clover is.
Early Access lists seven large dungeons with bosses, puzzles, and loot, about fifty weapons and tools, seventy talismans, and 110 monsters. You will not see that list in Beynon House. You will see a teaching house, a field, and a town that grows when guardians fall. If you want ranked crafts after Saintswood, open the build planner. If you want patch scope, open Early Access notes.
Leave this walkthrough when you can do three things without a tooltip: finish the birdcage without guessing, tell a scarecrow from a post, and walk Saintswood once by day and once after dark. The linear spine will still be there in the morning. The optional loops will not wait if you sprint past them toward Clocktower gossip you are not ready to spend. Play the opening hours like a survey, not like a speedrun, and Penwyll will still have secrets when you come back with a better right arm.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Penwyll, the doll, and Early Access.
What is the opening route?
Beynon House, then Saintswood, then Penwyll as a hub. This page stops there on purpose. Later landmarks such as the Clocktower and Mazechapel are town gossip, not this walkthrough's spoiler list.
How does the birdcage puzzle work?
Treat the cage as a mechanism, not set dressing. Interact, look again, and do not assume the first click finished the job. Demo players miss it by walking past.
Is the scarecrow a prop?
Sometimes it looks like one. Wait before you donate a flask. If the silhouette waits with you, it is not furniture. Spacing notes live in the combat guide.
Will this page spoil the first two bosses?
It tells you they exist in the opening stretch. Tactics without later names live on the bosses guide. Story after Saintswood is out of scope here.
Should I clear Saintswood only during the day?
No. Night is a second layout. Use the night cycle guide for lighting, Clover's glow, and the creatures that appear after dark.
Is the main quest linear?
Mostly, with multiple endings and a lot of optional content. Withering Realms is single-player. New Game+ is planned during Early Access toward a 1.0 in 2027.
