Withering Realms Clover

A nine-year-old ghost, a faint night glow, and a catalyst that works mid-swing.

Clover

Clover is the person you are actually playing, even when the camera is full of a two-metre doll. She is nine. She is a ghost. She wakes alone in a decaying mansion a few miles from the epicenter of the occult event that stopped the Great War in this 1926. The campaign is her attempt to find a way back to life in and around Penwyll. That is the premise, and this page will stay on that side of the spoiler line. No later plot turns, no named late bosses, no list of which townsfolk already know what she is.

She is not a mascot perched on a tank. Public combat talks are blunt: Clover rides on the doll’s back, and because she does, she can use an item or cast a spell while the doll is already attacking. Create a sigil as a blow lands. Drink while a heavy combo is still carrying the body forward. If you treat her as flavour, you are fighting with two arms in a four-arm game. The combat guide is the mechanical version of that sentence. This page is the character version.

What she looks like in the world

At night Clover carries a faint glow. It is not a lantern and it is not a full candelabrum. It is enough to mark her as present and not enough to replace a lighting loadout. The night cycle is where that distinction becomes a route-planning problem. Here it is a character fact: she is visible as a pale child-shaped light to the people — and the things — that can perceive her at all.

Only some people can see or hear her. That rule is the social horror under the action RPG. A street in Penwyll can be busy and she can still be alone in it. The trailer makes one exception public: Althea, the reporter and investigator, can see and hear her. That is why the Althea page is not optional reading. A person who can look Clover in the face changes what a conversation is. A person who cannot makes the doll look like a wandering construct with no rider.

Do not turn that into a full town directory. We do not know, from honest public materials, every shopkeeper’s perception check. Play the reactions you get. If someone stares through her, believe the stare. If someone answers, believe the answer. The glow does not guarantee an audience.

Hands — catalyst and consumables

Clover’s right hand holds a catalyst for casting. Those spells are designed to be quick and to enhance what the doll is already doing, not to replace the socket. Her left hand holds consumables: healing, grenades, the usual desperate kit. Those two hands are independent of the doll’s left arm (shields, pistols, utility) and of the missing right arm you fill with a craft. Four arms, four jobs. Clover owns the top two.

A catalyst-support build exists because some players will notice this immediately and some will not. You do not have to main that archetype. You do have to press the ghost’s buttons. A Pivoting Greatsword swing that lands without a spell or a flask is still a good swing. A swing that lands with either is the kit the developer is describing when he talks about four-arm combat.

She is not a second doll. She does not slot a Machinegun. She does not wear the seventy talismans; those sit on the constructed body. Her “gear” is the catalyst, the consumable, and the fact that she can use both while wood and metal are busy. If a guide tells you to ignore her until endgame, it is not a Withering Realms guide.

Story role without the later pages

Clover wants to live again. The doll is her companion and her vehicle. Penwyll is the town that holds shops, a repair shop, the Clocktower, and the Mazechapel. Graveyards, tombs, caves, and rotting estates surround it. Seven dungeons, 110 monsters, night revisits: those are the places she has to walk to make the premise true. Withering Rooms shares a universe and none of its chapter titles are required reading. This is a standalone story about a child who is already dead at the start.

What we will not do is narrate the mansion beat by beat. That is the opening walkthrough and the Getting Started page. What we will not do is name the thing at the heart of Penwyll’s secret. That is Althea’s job in the fiction and yours in the save file. Clover’s page stays with the ghost: glow, visibility, catalyst, hunger to be alive.

She is still nine. The doll is two metres of steel rods, skull, and organs. The contrast is the tone. A wiki that talks about her only as a DPS rider has missed the game. A wiki that talks about her only as a sad story has missed the catalyst.

How she sits next to the others

The Doll is the body. Clover is the will. Althea is the living adult who can perceive her and who works by lockpick, interrogation, and forgery rather than by socket crafts. You will spend most of the action RPG in Clover-plus-doll. You will spend the survival-horror stretches in Althea’s register. Switching registers is not dropping Clover from the story. It is the campaign admitting that some doors do not care about a greatsword.

Night is when Clover’s glow and Althea’s work overlap. A faint child-light in a street that has new monsters is a different image from a noon market. If you never take the pair out after dark, you have not met this character. You have met her daylight outline.

English is the Early Access language. Steam Early Access is dated 2 September 2026. Extra languages are planned for the 2027 1.0 build. Clover’s voice, such as it is, ships in that English-only window first. There is no extra ghost sitting on a second doll. One player, one rider, one constructed body.

When a shopkeeper stares through her, believe the stare. The glow is a mechanic, not a metaphor you can ignore in the field.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Penwyll, the doll, and Early Access.

Can everyone in Penwyll see Clover?

No. Only some people can see or hear her. The trailer shows that Althea can. Treat other reactions as information, not as a graphics glitch. More on that overlap lives on the Althea page.

What does Clover hold in combat?

A catalyst in her right hand and consumables in her left. She can use both while the doll is mid-attack. The combat guide covers how those hands sit next to the doll’s two arms.

Does Clover glow all the time?

Public materials describe a faint night glow, not a daylight floodlight. It will not replace a lighting tool such as the Enchanted Candelabrum. Plan actual night loadouts on the night cycle page.

Is Clover a sequel heroine from Withering Rooms?

No. Withering Realms is a standalone story in the same universe. You do not need the previous game to follow her. Start with Getting Started if you are new to both.

Can a second player control Clover?

No. The game is single-player. Clover and the doll act together because she rides the body, not because two people are assigned to the pair.
